Seems to me like Dr. Oz and his dermatologist friend here are just playing up the dangers without explaining any reason behind it. ANY nail service can give a client an infection if the salon does not properly sanitize their tools. The UV light has specific instructions and manufacturer product sheets that should always be followed EXACTLY by the salon technicians.

Most “nail shops” are not dedicated to the client, but to the number of clients they can push through the doors within a given day. Go to a salon that follows every sanitary precaution, and cares about each individual client’s health and safety. You may be paying extra, but it’s for the technician that a) knows the products and how to properly use them b) understands the laws and regulations regarding following manufacture instructions and sanitary procedures for every product, and c) has a firm understanding of nail anatomy, physiology, and knows when to refer a client to a physician! If a client comes in with a nail fungus or bacterial infection, the salon should NEVER service that person.

I’ve heard of “nail shops” that will cover a toe riddled with fungus with an acrylic nail, just to make it LOOK better. THAT is what creates outbreaks of even more serious illnesses, and even can lead to amputations!

If a nail service was truly damaging it would not last long enough to become this popular. The gel service is in the same family as all acrylic services. We have seen vast improvements in technology since the 90’s for nail services, and gel is no more damaging than any other nail enhancement service.
